My fiancee proposed to me about 3 months ago. He knew the general style I wanted and did a pretty good job. It is a princess cut diamond (about .33 carats) with 4 square side stones on each side, 1 carat total weight. I liked it for a while, but I have always wanted a solitaire ring. How much would it cost to put the center stone into another ring, and then turn the side stones into the wedding band?
you’ll have to take it to a jeweler to find out. you;ll have to get a mounting, which is basically just the band, for both. If they are just plain it should cost probably a few hundred per ring. But I don’t know what it would cost to actually set it.

How much damage will you do to your relationship if you take the ring he chose and have it chopped into separate rings? As you say, he knew the general style you wanted and he did his best with the knowledge that he had based on what you had said. If you imply that his choice was not good enough for you, this is a precedent that he will never forget.
It sounds like a beautiful ring and something you could wear for ten years. If you are still together, then have the stone reset and make the smaller diamonds into earrings or another ring. Until then, praise him and tell him what great taste he has. .
